Workflow Management

Part of an Enterprise Content Management System—along with document management, imaging, enterprise search and records management—, a workflow management system's objective is to automate processes by incorporating the resources necessary to carry out a particular task. 

It allows the capture, tracking, visualization and delivery of content through combinations of parallel and sequential procedure processing. Most workflow systems include deadline management with e-mail reminders, in-process step monitoring, process status reporting and work delegation, as well as tools for designing processes.

Although sometimes used interchangeably, workflow management and business process management (BPM) are quite different in nature, the latter being inclusive of the former in most instances.
